The Birmingham District Spelling Bee is open to all registered homeschooled students in Alabama who have not yet completed the 8th grade, regardless of previous participation in a school-level Bee. A speller may compete in only one district bee; other bees will be held in the Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery areas.
The word list will include words from the 2014 Scripps list and the 2014 Spell It! Other age-appropriate words will be included.
Registration with Scripps National Spelling Bee is required for participation. Spellers will need to bring proof of registration and/or proof of enrollment in a registered association. (Families should register with Learning at Home for $10. Click here for registration information)
To register for the Birmingham District Spelling Bee, please send the following information to spellingbee@bellsouth.net: speller’s name, age, family e-mail address, family mailing address and phone number, and school name and/or name of the association that is registered with Scripps. (We ask for contact information to be able to contact you in the event of changes and to notify you of future spelling bee events.)
An entry fee of $2 per speller is requested to cover costs of certificates and printing.
If you would like to share in a time of refreshments and fellowship after the bee, please bring a finger food to share. Drinks and paper products will be provided.
