SPRING SEMESTER
This spring, the Community Education Department of Shelby County Schools will offer Driver Education classes. The fall/spring driver education session will be an open enrollment opportunity for any high school student.
Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive class credit through their school, certificate of completion, vessel endorsement and instructions to acquire their driver license online. Certified Driver Education instructors will teach the class.
Course requirements:
- students must turn 16 by the end of May 2022 and MUST have held their permit for six months prior to their birthday to test for their license. Example, date of birth – May 1, 2022, student must have an issue date for the permit on or before November 1, 2021.
- Prior to beginning class, students must have driven a minimum of 50 miles.

Online Payment: Fee: $360.00 – price includes a gas fee. There will be a $60 non-refundable fee that will be applied your fee when the application is accepted. Partial payments will be accepted as long as final payment is made before the first day of class.
The Community Ed staff will contact students enrolled via email and all the instructions for the class will be given at this time. The academic phase will be completed virtually, within a two-week period. Each student will receive a temporary Shelby County email address to access the google classroom platform of the course. Driving schedules will be arranged between the driving instructor and the student. All driving will consist of up to six hours of in car instruction.

SUMMER
This summer the Community Education Department of Shelby County Schools will be offering Driver Education and Health classes. Health classes will be held at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center in Alabaster and Driver Education will be held at Helena High School. Classes are taught by certified high school Driver Education and Health teachers.
Driver Education: – Students must have 50 miles of driving experience before class starts.
1st session– May 3l (meeting) to June 12, 2nd session – June 13 (meeting) to June 26, 3rd session – June 27 (meeting) to July 10
- First Day: Meet from 9 am until 10:30 at Helena High School
- Bring permit and electronic device to enable access to internet
- Receive instructions for completing academic phase during the chosen session.
- Receive instructions for setting up the remind app for communication and driving schedule
- Driving must be completed during the chosen session. Students will drive three 2 hour blocks. Let instructors know whether morning or afternoon would be better.
- Each student will receive a grade, semester credit, and Certificate of Completion.
- Upon passing the driving portion, the student will receive instructions to obtain their Driver License online.
